non-article: CPD in UK

The Health Professions Council (HPC) in United Kingdom has considered that CPD may be linked to registration. However, it will not come into effect for at least 3 years from 2002 summer

The Council has already decided however that continuing professional development should: 1)avoid monitoring registrants’ compliance based simply on the number of hours undertaken each year; i.e. input-based VS outcome-focus 2) be linked to national standards; 3)take account of the work of others, such as the Allied Health Professions’ (AHP) project on demonstrating competence through CPD that is already being undertaken; 4)take account of the needs of part-time and self-employed registrants; and 5)require individual registrants to commit themselves to CPD It is also proposed that CPD activities could cover, in broad definition, a wide range of formal and informal learning activities in which qualified and assistant members are engaged. Here are some examples: I. Formal: a)Post-qualification courses (including short courses provided both in-house and by external providers) b) Certificated study: - Degree - Higher degree - Research degree c) Attendance at conferences and seminars d) Undertaking research and presentation of research papers e) Writing for journals II. Informal: a)Systematic reflection on practice b)Significant incident analysis c) Clinical/professional supervision d) Self-supported or peer-supported study e)Reading and reviewing journals and research papers f) Preparing and delivering teaching g) Attending meetings, e.g. Clinical Interest Group h) Secondment/work shadowing i)Mentoring and supervising (staff and/or students) j)Learning from patients and from own experience of treatment k) Supervising or teaching staff and students in the workplace l)Work-based learning
