Chairman Report

2004 Annual General Meeting

Hong Kong Physiotherapists Union

 

The new executive committee was formed during March of 2003. We have seven volunteers who were willing to serve as the executive members. They worked in a variety of physiotherapy facilities such as nursing homes, non-government organization as well as public and private hospitals. We believed this representation would facilitate our service effectively.

 

The objectives of the Committee were established as follow:
  

1. To promote excellence and the image of physiotherapy in Hong Kong.

2. To improve members welfare.

3. To be concern about the employment of physiotherapy graduates and members.

4. To liaise with other physiotherapy organization in order to establish cooperation for further professional development such as direct access and continuous professional education.

 
The major activities and events during the last year were summarized in the following table. Most importantly, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to our executive committee members and the editorial members, for all their marvelous work during the last year. We will continue to strive for the best interest to our profession and our Union members.

The major events and activities conducted in the past year were summarized as follow:

March 2003  Formation of the new executive committee:

April 2003Participated in the organization and preparation of funeral service of Mr. Victor Leung, a  physiotherapist who died from SARS.

Distributed the SARS questionnaires.

May 2003Participated in Mr. Victor Leung's memorial service.

Prepared the HKPU introductory pamphlets for new graduates.

June 2003Re-designed the Union's newsletter, PhysioLink.

Liaised with the Hon. Mak Kwok Fung, member (Health Services), Legislative Council, HKSAR,  on the matter of Grade Review.

Attended the Staff Group Consultative Committee meeting.

A letter sent to Tung Wah Group of Hospitals concerning on the work standard and uncertain nature of service provided by the Rehabilitation Practitioner (Physiotherapy).

Conducted questionnaire survey on Grade Review in Physiotherapy

July 2003Established and redesigned the new Union's web site.

A letter sent to the Convenor of Physiotherapy Grade Working Group, Hospital Authority, to reflect our members' concern on the issue of Grade Review.

Attended a CPD forum in QEH organized by the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Board.

Prepared questionnaires to collect opinion about CPD and the new position 'Rehabilitation Practitioner'.

Distributed the HKPU pamphlets to the Physiotherapy Concern and Physiotherapy Year 3 students.

August 2003Provided information of CPD in other countries and other healthcare professions in Hong Kong.

Interview with our adviser, Ms. Elizabeth Wong, on the issue of CPD, Physiotherapy specialization, and Grade Review.

Conducted questionnaire survey on CPD to collect members' opinion.

Sept 2003Organized a CPD sharing seminar in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Collected and summarized the result of CPD questionnaire, CPD sharing meeting, and members' opinion.

October 2003 Consultation document sent to the Hong Kong Physiotherapists Board to reflect member's opinion regarding the issue of CPD.

Collected members' signatures to the Hong Kong Physiotherapists Board regarding the issue of CPD.

Nov 2003Attended the first meeting of the Physiotherapy Working Group to study issues related to the practice of physiotherapy of the Physiotherapists Board.

Prepared letters to Department of Health regarding the salary cut of their contracted physiotherapists.

Prepared letters to LCK Center regarding the new position of rehabilitation practitioner.

Dec 2003Attended a meeting regarding the Physiotherapy Grade Review at the Headquarter of Hospital Authority.

Conducted a questionnaire survey on the issue of physiotherapy services delegation in Hong Kong.

Conducted a questionnaire survey regarding the misuse of the term 'Physiotherapy' in Hong Kong.

January 2004Attended the second meeting of the Physiotherapy Working Group to study issues related to the practice of physiotherapy regarding the issue of physiotherapy services delegation.
